North Cascades Glacier

Climate Project 2022

In August 2023 I had the privilege of joining Dr. Mauri Pelto and his team for a third trip to the North Cascades, and I shared a week with them in the field at Mount Baker and Mount Daniel. Like prior years, the glaciers continue to change and recede up the slopes of the peaks. These paintings are snapshots of this change.

“August 19th, 2022: I hiked to the Easton glacier camp alone today. Following memories and faded footsteps from the last three years of coming here. Looking out at Glacier Peak, I feel echoes of my joy sketching it for the first time 12 years ago. As I paint here again, the threads of a past self are woven anew into the lines of graphite and delicate layers of color. As the lights fades, the sky and my colors shift. The past and the present blend in whorls of pigment.” - Field Journal
