THE LIVING SNOW PROJECT

The Living Snow Project is led by Dr. Robin Kodner at Western Washington University. In 2022, I joined Dr. Kodner and her research team in the field to document their work with snow algae in a sketch, photos, and a short video.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: “The Living Snow Project’s goal is to engage the outdoor recreation community in research that is characterizing the biodiversity of pink snow and its impact on snowmelt dynamics. By empowering people of all ages to participate in science in the places they love to play, we help cultivate a deeper awareness of our living planet and a greater appreciation for the conservation of threatened ecosystems.

If you visit environments that might have snow algae I highly encourage you to share your observations with the project via their app, and maybe even collect samples for them too! Both are really fun ways to engage with a research team and support their work. You can find their app and more info about volunteering here.
